You wouldn’t go out of the house without your underwear would you? Then you wouldn’t want to apply eyeshadow without an eyeshadow primer!

Eyeshadow primers are what hold your eye makeup in place and resist creasing throughout the day.  It’s really important not to skip this step in your makeup routine because sometimes it is the products you don’t see that make all the difference!

Ever since I started using an eyeshadow primer, the blending of my eyeshadow looks so much better.

There are so many eyeshadow primers to choose from so I’ll give you the top 10 eyeshadow primers that are the best right now.

The Best Eyeshadow Primers

  1. Too Faced Shadow Insurance – $24 CAD

Too Faced is known for their eyeshadows, so of course it is only natural for them to have created an amazing eyeshadow primer.  I’ve been using the Too Faced Shadow Insurance for the last few weeks and I’m pleasantly surprised by the way my eyeshadow lasts.  It doesn’t crease and the application is smooth when you put it on your eye lids.

2. Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion (Original) – $28 CAD

If there is one brand known for their eyeshadow primers it’s urban decay.  The Urban Decay Original Eyeshadow Primer is to me, one of the better eyeshadow primers.  The formula is not sticky and it goes on super smoothly and promises 24 hour non-crease. The expanded Primer Potion line includes eyeshadow primers that are more pigmented with colour for a variety of reasons.

For example, Eden (Shown Below) – $28 CAD is pigmented to allow brighter eyeshadows come through instead of the transparency of the Original Primer Portion.

Another example is Caffeine which has a tone for deeper skin tones or to intensify browner shadows. The Original Eyeshadow Primer Potion is also amazing for oily lids! It doesn’t dry them out either or make them itchy.  I would say that you shouldn’t use concealer if you think that is your solution to oily eyelids.  You really need to use an eye primer that is made for just that! Keep that in mind the next time you use concealer on your eyelids.

3. Nars Pro Primer Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base – $33 CAD

The NARS Pro Primer Smudge Proof Eyeshadow base comes in a tube with a doe foot applicator.  It’s really easy to apply and true to its name, it is smudge proof. It helps to maximize eyeshadow colour because it’s a bit more opaque than some of the translucent eyeshadow primers.  I’ve used this NARS eyeshadow primer many times and it never disappoints the staying power and non-creasing in my eyeshadow. Great for oily lids as well!

This is my ultimate favourite eyeshadow primer.  If you have been reading this blog you’ll know that NARS is my favourite makeup brand and I do a lot of reviews on it!

4. Bobbi Brown Longwear Eyebase – $30 CAD

The Longwear Eyebase by Bobbi Brown is another amazing eyeshadow extender.  It comes in 4 shades, similar to the Urban Decay shade range. It also comes in a tube with a doe foot applicator that makes application easy.

If you love Bobbi Brown products, you’ll likely like the eye base.  I know when I shop for products from brands I’m loyal to, I end up liking most of the products in the line however, I do switch around.

5. Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Pro Filt’r Amplifying Eye Primer – $28 CAD

Here’s a new product on the scene! The Fenty Beauty eyeshadow primer is primed for success! Haha – see what I did there? The Rihanna Pro Filt’r Amplifying Eye Primer really helps smooth out any creases for perfect eyeshadow application.  If you’re familiar with the Fenty Beauty line, it’s packaged so beautifully (as you can see from the photos) and it’s universally flattering among all skin tones.

6. Smashbox 24 Hour Photo Finish Shadow Primer – $26 CAD

The Smashbox Shadow Primer is another great eyeshadow primer.  However, this one takes a bit of warming up with your fingers to ensure it goes on smoothly.  The tube is great for pushing the product up so you can maximize usage. The Smashbox 24 Hour Photo Finish Shadow Primer is also amazing for oily lids! I’ll point out the other eyeshadow primers that are good for oily lids throughout this article.

7. Revlon ColourStay Eyeshadow Primer

The Revlon ColourStay Eyeshadow Primer is one of the best eyeshadow primers for long lasting eyeshadow.  The ColourStay formula promises stay all day and crease free eyeshadow wear all day long. Revlon is one of my favourite brands and this product is no different in quality from the other amazing Revlon Products.

8. Milani Eyeshadow Primer

Have you heard of one of the hottest brands on the scene? Milani is a drugstore brand that is moving into my heart! The Milani Eyeshadow Primer is one of the best drugstore eyeshadow primers I’ve tried in a long time.  It’s a nude shade that dries and allows bright eyeshadows to pop through.

FYI – If you’re just hearing about this brand – click here to view the full assortment on Shoppers Drugmart Beauty Boutique.

9.Physicians Formula #Instaready Eye Primer Duo

The Physicians Formula #Instaready Eye Primer Duo is probably one of the best eyeshadow primers for long lasting eyeshadow because it comes with TWO products!  Basically, one product is for matte eyeshadows and the other one is for more shimmer shades.

I am tipping my hat to you Physicians Formula for putting together such an amazing product! *clap clap clap*

10. Maybelline Master Long Lasting Shadow Base – $7.64 CAD

Maybelline is usually very ahead of the curve when it comes to technology.  The Long Lasting Shadow Base locks makeup in place and has 5 stars on Amazon.  I would definitely recommend the Maybelline Long Lasting Shadow base for those opaque colours.  You’ll love the way this glides onto your eyelids.

My one final thought is that if you’re going to be doing a killer eyeshadow look then you always should be using an eyeshadow primer.  No matter which one you choose make sure you test it out and get more reviews if you are unsure which one is top quality.

If you are into primers you’ll probably be into makeup setting sprays.   Click here to find out what the 10 best makeup setting sprays are!

Until then, happy reading the rest of my top makeup lists as there will sure to be more!
