When I started using an eye cream I didn’t think that I would end up using it daily. I will review best eye creams for each type of skin concern. Eye creams are for people who want to either prevent the signs of aging from wrinkles or reverse the signs of aging for people who already have wrinkles.
There are so many eye creams on the market it is hard to know which of the best eye creams are for your skin type. Keep reading to find out why you should use an eye cream and which one you should use to fix your skin concerns.
Why You Should Use an Eye Cream
The reason why we should use an eye cream is for preventative measures. Additionally, most eye creams tighten and firm around the skin which of course, helps with seamless makeup application.
You may not notice it but over time skin around the eyes since we use those muscles often, can lose their elasticity. This is the reason why we get crows feet. If you prevent this from happening by moisturizing the skin around the eye you don’t give crows feet a chancce.
Also, eye creams are incredibly gentle especially since the skin around our eyes is very thin. If you use an ordinary moisturizer for the face around your eyes, you could get blocked pores or what is also known as “milia”. Milia are clogged white heads around the eyes because the skin is so paper thin that irritation happens often around that part of the skin.
For all of these reasons, even if you think you shouldn’t you should still use an eye cream daily.
How to Use an Eye Cream
Below is a picture on where to apply eye cream. You do not apply eye cream under the eye. It is meant as a preventative firming product.
When you apply the eye cream, the best tool to use is your finger. You want to gently pat around the area seen in photo. This will include around the orbital bone as well as on the outer corner of the eye to help prevent the crows feet from appearing.
You can also apply eye creams under the eye but make sure you use your ring finger to pat the product into place. This is because the ring finger does not contain as much pressure as your other fingers and will not damage the skin under the eye.
How An Eye Cream Works
An eye cream will work to repair damage that has been done to the skin around the eye. Because the skin around the eye is so sensitive, this is the first place on your face you will get wrinkles. Along with wrinkles comes redness and loss of elasticity. An eye cream has ceramides and active ingredients to reverse the signs of aging and restore skin’s natural barrier.
Since you now understand how to apply an eye cream, let’s talk about the best eye creams 2020. There are some brands such as Dermalogica and Vivier Skin that are less fancy and focus on the dermatologist aspect of the product. In my opinion, an eye cream should be focused on key ingredients and less about fancy packaging.
Best Eye Creams with SPF
Dermalogica Total Eye Care – $75 CAD
The Dermalogica Total Eye Care is my favourite eye cream product. It comes in a tube that doesn’t squeeze out any excess product. It also feels really silky when you apply it to the outer corner of the eyes. I love applying this daily. Since I have been using this eye cream for all of 2019, I can tell you that it is the best eye cream I have ever tried.
I do not have any wrinkles and the sides of my eyes are very firm and plump. My skin tone I have been told is great and firm and I credit this to the Dermalogica Total Eye Care. The Dermalogica Total Eye Care also has SPF 15 in it so that you are still protected from the sun especially around the thin skin around the eyes.
This little tube will also last you an entire year if not more.
You can read my entire review of the best Dermalogica products post here if you are interested in the entire Dermalogica brand.
SuperGoop! Bright-Eyed 100% Mineral Eye Cream SPF 40 – $36 USD
SuperGoop! Is the brand known for the Glowscreen sunscreen which is the best sunscreen on the market right now in 2021. The Bright-Eyed 100% Mineral Eye Cream SPF 40 is a best seller because it has one of the highest SPFs for an eye cream. You need UV protection around the skin of the eye because it is so thin and the Bright-Eyed Mineral Eye cream is perfect because it is illuminating and wears well under makeup.
SkinCeuticals Physical Eye UV Defense Sunscreen SPF 50 – $42.90 CAD
The SkinCeuticals Physical Eye UV Defense Sunscreen is one of the best eye creams with SPF in it. SkinCeuticals is also a proven skincare brand recommended by dermatologists. This eye cream is developed specifically for those with oily skin so if you’re looking for an eye cream oily skin and has SPF in it this is the best option. It also contains ingredients such as Zinc and ceramides to lock in moisture.
Best Eye Creams for Anti-Aging
Paula’s Choice Resist Anti-Aging Eye Cream – $12.00 USD
Paula’s Choice is one of the best skincare brands on the market. Read my post on how to buy Paula’s Choice in Canada if you are from Canada. For only $12.00 you can get your hands on this Anti-Aging Eye Cream. The great thing about the Resist Anti-Aging Eye Cream is that you use it at night so that you wake up with restful eyes because it also de-puffs the skin. It also helps to brighten so you’re getting two benefits in one with this eye cream.
Drunk Elephant Shaba Complex Firming Eye Serum – $79 CAD
Drunk Elephant products are known for their natural ingredients as well as quality. What is unique about this product is that the Shaba Complex uses ingredients to tackle the issues and repair the skin instead of covering them up.
If you are worried about aging as one of your main concerns, the Drunk Elephant Shaba Complex Firming Eye Serum is one of the best eye creams for 2020. It has black tea ferment and copper peptides that slow down signs of aging and support a firmer eye area.
On Sephora Canada, out of 831 reviews this product earned 4 stars. The review of the Drunk Elephant Shaba Complex are positive and people say that they actually got rid of their crows feet and wrinkles entirely. Another reason why the reviews on Sephora for this product are so great is that they eliminate dark circles entirely. So, if you have dark circles and are looking to eliminate them the $79 price point doesn’t seem to bad.
Best Eye Creams for Brighter Eyes
Ole Henriksen Banana Bright Eye Cream – $39.00 CAD
The Ole Henrikson Banana Bright Eye Cream, claims to ‘brighten and firm to allow an easy application of concealer and makeup” or so I am paraphrasing. With the vitamin c infused formula, this product firms and hydrates the eye area preventing wrinkles and fine lines.
The reviews on Sephora for the Ole Henriksen Banana Bright Eye Cream is that it definitely firms and brightens. The first review is from someone who is 41 and they said that it definitely reduced the fine lines and bags under their eyes. There is another review that also says the Banana Bright Eye Cream lightened their dark circles under the eye.
Out of 2,000 reviews, this product got 4 stars on Sephora Canada. The price tag is $52 but you’ll see that since eye creams can be expensive, this isn’t too pricey for an eye cream.
Origins GinZing Refreshing Eye Cream to Brighten & Depuff On-The-Go – $35
The Origins GinZing Refreshing Eye Cream to Brighten and Depuff is one of the most soothing eye creams for brightening. Firstly, the smell of this eye cream has a citrus tone and is instantly refreshing especially in the morning. The key ingredient that this eye cream uses to brighten and Depuff is caffeine because that is the exact ingredient that reduces inflammation. It also helps to brighten dark circles over time and is very easy to apply with the sponge tip applicator. To be honest, this is one of the most innovative brightening eye creams right now and it is very affordable at $35 CAD.
Best Eye Creams for Hydration
La Roche Posay Hydraphase Intense Eyes – $37 CAD
The La Roche Posay Hydraphase Intense Eyes (Part of the Hydraphase product line we talked about in this post). This product not only rehydrates skin but helps with anti-puffiness.
This is also a really good pick for a drugstore higher end skincare product. Shoppers Drug Mart in Canada carries La Roche Posay in most of their stores in the skincare section so it is always readily available.
Vivier Peptide CR Eye Cream
The holy grail of eye cream 2020 would have to be the Vivier Peptide CR Eye Cream. I was given this product to me by my Vivier Skincare Representative who sells to dermatologists all over Canada. The Vivier Peptide Eye Cream is one of the best for 2020 because it is a medical grade eye contour cream.
Included in the ingredients are squalane, soy protein and wheat protein which are among the best eye cream ingredients you can find.
Even though this eye cream is pricey, if you are concerned about fine lines, using this product daily and up to twice a day will help eliminate your concerns.
Included in the ingredients is Co-Q10 to help diminish signs of premature aging and age spots from environmental factors such as pollution.

What is the Best Eye Cream for Milia Prone Skin?
I’ve spoken a lot about milia but may not know what it is. Milia is the clogging of the delicate pores around the eye area that can turn into little white bumps. You can see what milia is from the photo below, it is very unsightly and there are products that have ingredients such as silicon, dimethicone and mineral oils that clog the fine skin around the eye.
One of the best eye creams to combat milia is the Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Eye Cream With Retinol. It also contains hylauronic acid as well as helps lighten dark circles and reduces eye puffiness.
It is also really affordable at only $16.67 Canadian on Amazon (here).
