When I think of perfect skin, I think of clean and flawless – without dryness, oil and flaking. For over two years I have figured out what the best Dermlaogica products are for perfect skin. I will share my findings about the products that are absolutely must-haves and some that you can live without.
The Dermalogica Brand Review
Dermalogica is a brand that focuses on the science and health. The skincare line is formulated for quality skin health versus beauty. The scientist behind Dermalogica wanted to develop products that are free from irritants, fragrance and gimmicks.
They also don’t focus on fancy packaging because that distracts from the overall focus on the product.
Because I have acne prone skin, I do look for products that can help heal my acne as well as prevent it. I have found that when using Dermalogica products, I do not get as many breakouts.
Where Can You Buy The Best Dermalogica Products?
When I first got introduced to Dermalogica, I purchased all of my skincare products from Sephora Canada in Toronto. You can go in store or purchase all of the same Dermalogica products online.
If you live in Toronto, there is a standalone Dermalogica store downtown in the “Path” in Royal Bank Plaza. There, you can book facials and treatments or get your favourite Dermalogica products.
If you don’t live downtown, in Toronto you can find Dermalogica products in salons such as “The Ten Spot” and “Concepts” in Yorkville. Dermalogica is a brand that is associated with upscale salons so you will not find Dermalogica at Shoppers Drug Mart.
I have found older packaged Dermalogica products at Winners and Marshalls but be careful to watch for the expiry date.
Dermalogica Products Review
I have used about 5 different products from Dermalogica that I’ve repeatedly purchased over the past 2 years. See if any of these Dermalogica Products are best for your skin needs.
Total Eye Care
One of my most favourite products is the Total Eye Care from Dermalogica. You should read my post on “Best Eye Creams” where I talk about the Total Eye Care.
The total eye care goes on silky smooth and has SPF15 which is almost never heard of with an eye cream. This is probably the reason why my husband says I don’t have wrinkles!
I use the Total Eye Care every day and find that it is a part of my overall skincare routine. It reduces fine lines, helps get rid of dark circles and overall puffiness. I have been using one tube for over 2 years now and I am still obsessed with this product.
Albeit a bit pricey, I would say that all eye creams are expensive because they contain such a concentrated formula of perfect ingredients. When I run out of the Total Eye Care I will definitely repurchase.
Don’t listen to the reviews on Sephora which only has 6 reviews and 3.5 stars. This is the best eye cream I have ever tried and I will be replenishing it when I run out.
Daily Microfoliant Exfoliator
My skin gets very congested as I mentioned I have acne prone skin. If you also get breakouts, you’ll want to ensure you are exfoliating daily. Some exfoliants are really hash on the skin. The Daily Microfoliant from Dermalogica is one of the most gentle exfoliants around.
It is called the Daily Microfoliant because it is very safe to use daily since it is so gentle.
The package is in a large tube that has small particles which are activated with water. You only need to pour out a quarter sized amount onto your hands and mix with water which will turn into a fine paste.
The Daily Microfoliant is very similar to Tatcha’s Rice Polish Foaming Enzyme Cleanser except the size on the Tatcha is very small and doesn’t have as good of a rating on Sephora as the Daily Microfoliant.
I also received a facial from Sephora using only Dermalogica products and the Daily Microfoliant was the one that made the most impact on my skin. It got rid of all of the milia or congestion around my nose and I think it is one of the best Dermalogica products.
I use the Daily Mircofoliant in the shower (but keep the actual product outside of the shower). This way, I use it daily and it is really easy to mix with water. It also ends up giving off a bit of a milky or rice like smell which I actually love!
If you’re struggling to find an exfoliator that is gentle and is good for acne prone skin I highly recommend the Daily Microfoliant Exfoliator.
Dermalogica Precleanse Cleansing Oil
I can see if you have acne prone skin why you would be wary of a cleansing oil. One of the best Dermalogica products is the Precleanse Cleansing Oil but for reasons that you may not think of.
A cleansing oil needs to be paired with an actual cleanser (keep reading for a review of the Dermalogica Cleanser below). However, it is a step that allows for dirt to be loosened on your skin so that the cleanser can do it’s job.
I use the Precleanse Cleansing Oil after I take off my makeup with my micellar water. I take one pump of the Cleansing Oil and vigorously rub that into my skin and scrub a bit harder around my nose and other areas where I know pores are clogged.
It may seem like you’re just putting oil on your face but it is what happens after you use other products that you can really notice a difference.
I tried a trick that helps get rid of the grime, dirt and blackheads on my nose using this Precleanse oil. Essentially, what you do is use the Precleanse Oil followed up by a clay face mask by Origins called “Retexturizing Face Mask with Rose Clay“. Then you use the Precleanse Oil again but this time keep rubbing all of the “grit” and dirt out of your nose.
Some people on reddit swear by this practice to help them loosen up the dirt on their nose. They call it “gritting”.
However, if you do not want to do that regimen, always use the Precleanse Oil followed up by a cleanser. The Precleanse Oil will not leave your skin feeling greasy if you do this, rather it will feel very supple and soft – so don’t let the name fool you!
Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel
As mentioned above, the Special Cleansing Gel is a must have for a perfect skincare regimen. The Special Cleansing Gel is a must have basic for any skincare routine. The size of the Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel is 250 mL for a standard size or you can purchase a HUGE size of 500 mL if you find this becomes your everyday cleanser.
I have the standard size of the Special Cleansing Gel and find I have barely made a dent in it because you don’t have to use a lot of product to cleanse your entire face. I also like using the Luna silicone vibrating tool when I use the Cleansing Gel because I like to ensure the product gets deep into my pores.
Even if you don’t have time to use the Precleanse Oil beforehand, the Special Cleansing Gel acts as a very gentle everyday cleanser and makes your skin feel clean and refreshed.
There are many similar cleansing gels including ones from Caudalie, Clarins and Vivier to name a few. I like the Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel best because I find it is most gentle on my skin and doesn’t have a scent to it. It does have lavender in it which soothes the skin and I feel is the perfect addition to my skincare routine since the ingredients are simple.
I feel that cleansers should be fragrance free and easy to use which is exactly what the Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel is made for.
Dermalogica Sound Sleep Cocoon
The Sound Sleep Cocoon is hands down one of the best Dermalogica products especially as an overnight sleep mask or moisturizer. At first, I was given a sample of the Dermalogica Sound Sleep Cocoon and thought there wasn’t much to it.
However, when I used the Sound Sleep Cocoon over about a week, I noticed that I woke up with the most perfect skin. It was like I had baby skin all over again. When I didn’t use it, I would wake up with my skin feeling gritty and I looked tired.
There is something special about the Sound Sleep Cocoon and of course the ingredients make it a special night time product. You’ll find ingredients such as lavender oils, herbs and lots of flower extracts.
Dermalogica says that the Sound Sleep Cocoon has the best effect when used with the following products: Precleanse Cleansing Oil, Special Cleansing Gel and toner. It can be used after your Dermalogica regimen for an added barrier of moisture.
The Sound Sleep Cocoon is great for all skin types because it is not greasy at ALL. It is a gel more than a cream so as soon as you put into onto your skin after cleansing you’ll get a cooling feeling. The lavender also helps you sleep better at night. I love this product and think it is one of the best Dermalogica products I have ever tried.
The Sound Sleep Cocoon is one of the best Dermalogica Products but can be really pricey. You also don’t need to put a lot of the product on your skin so it should last you a long time. However, I went to the Dermalogica store in Toronto and was able to get a travel size. Since my sample size lasted me a long time I figured another smaller size would be worth it.
If you decide the Sound Sleep Cocoon is something you would like to try you can always ask for a sample at Sephora before you commit to the larger size.
Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF50
This daily moisturizer is VERY expensive. I will stress this but at the same time, it is one of the best moisturizers I have ever tried. It comes in a very easy to apply pump format. You only need one pump per day to get the most out of this product.
It helps with firmness and elasticity as well as improving the look of fine lines and wrinkles. Infused with collagen producing activities, the Dynamic Skin Recovery helps plump up the skin reviving it’s natural youthful look.
On Sephora, 91% of people would recommend this product and even say that it’s a moisturizer with SPF that doesn’t feel thick and block pores. Since SPF makes the cream thicker, there aren’t a lot of companies who make moisturizers that are lightweight and contain a high SPF. It also doesn’t make skin greasy and it is easy to apply your makeup on top.
The Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Recovery is one of the best Dermalogica products and is perfect for dry skin.
There you have some of the best Dermalogica products that I feel comfortable recommending. There are a lot of other Dermalogica products that I didn’t mention because I haven’t tried them. However, knowing the quality of the brand, I would say that the risk is low if you want to try something from the brand.
Skincare no matter what age is really important to invest in and even though the products can get pricey, you live in your skin every single day!
